Vikki Carr will perform Friday at Brownsville's Jacob Brown Auditorium.

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College 2007 Arts and Entertainment Season will come to a close Friday evening with a concert by three-time Grammy award winner Vikki Carr.

Carr, who was born Florencia Biscenta de Casillas Martinez Cardona in El Paso, is known for her ability to sing wide range of different styles of music in both English and Spanish.

Since her career first began in 1961, Carr has appeared in numerous film, theater, radio and television productions. However, she has not forgotten her many fans throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

“She’s performed (in Brownsville)… She’s played at the (South Padre) Island, she’s played in McAllen.” said Maria Ruth Torres, interim director of the Fort Brown Memorial Center. “A lot of people like her because she does sing in Spanish.”

For Brownsville resident Cookie (checking on name) Wimer, tonight’s performance will mark a 35-year fascination with the internationally known entertainer. Wimer, 51, has been a member of Carr’s fan club since 1972, and has attended the performer’s concerts in San Antonio, Houston, Las Vegas, and throughout the Rio Grande Valley. She said that Carr is known sing her songs both acappella as well as with a band, delivering a powerful performance that keeps her returning year after year.

“I grew up listening to Vikki’s music,” Wimer said. “I’ve been going to her concerts since I was 16- years-old. I’ve seen over 80 concerts easily.”

Torres said that tonight’s concert is expected to generate quite a large crowd as some of her fan club members from as far away as Chicago have traveled to Brownsville to hear her sing. She said that Carr’s show has already generated impressive sales, as those in the community are all too familiar with her ability to attract a diverse audience.

“She does a little bit of everything,” Torres said. “She’s gone all the way from Latin to country and everything in between.”

This was definitely the best concert of the season! What a show! Bring her back, PLEASE! Next time I hope to meet Cookie - I saw her there but she looked busy. Cookie, please let Miss Carr know that we want her back!

Kudos to music professor Alice Gomez for playing percussion for Vikki at her Nov. 2nd concert here in Brownsville! Prof. Gomez did such a great job that she has been invited to play percussion again for Vikki's Night in Vienna New Years Eve concert at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio!

I think people were trying to buy the first section of seats the Fifty dollar ones. People were chatting after the show wanting to buy closer tickets to the stage that area was completely sold out. I did see one empty seat in the first section, but everything else was sold out from what I could see in the better seats. Vikki was the best performer in Brownsville this year gotta bring her back Cookie and Maria. Happy Holidays to all of Vikki's fans and readers here.

I just want to say that from where I was seated, I didnt see any empty seats, and the crowd loved Vikki Carr. I loved her country songs as much as her pop choices, Spanish Harlem, Anyone Who Had A Heart, and Can't Take My Eyes off You. This lady is pure class both Arturo and Jose were good shows, but Vikki's 2007 concert here in Brownsville was the best of the three. Maria, please extend a encore performance for Miss Carr next year, we love her here!

Congratulations to Maria and her devoted staff for all their hard work with preparing for Vikki's recent concert. I have had many emails from fans who attended with rave reviews. I also want to thank Cookie Wimer VSP's own Brownsville assistant for all her hard work.

What radio station were your listening to that said the show was sold out? We did not advertising on the radio and tickets were still available at the door. Sorry you were misinformed. Maria

Cecilia, I'm sorry you weren't in attendance. You missed one heck of a concert! The next one is in San Antonio, New Years' Eve, at the Majestic Theatre. God bless all of you for your most gracious reviews!

Alas, I could not be there to hear Vikki in concert in Brownsville, TX! As the song says, Brownsville people "are the luckiest people" on earth for having heard one of the truly great ones. A wish--may she come up to my neck of the woods!

I am so happy that I have gotten to go to so many of VIKKI concerts. Her music was and still is played around the house. But my cousin Cookie is the one who got me started going to her concerts and you get addicted. I LOVE IT

Thank you all SO MUCH for all your wonderful comments! You've made my year! I wish you all would've come up to me and said hello! I would've loved to have met you Juan, Manuel, Alex and Sylvia. Wasn't it a spectacular concert? And yes Manuel, let's all let the venue know how much we loved Vikki's packed concert and what a wonderful job they did! Who will ever forget this night?

Did Vikki sing her heart out? Of course and the audience went wild. Throughout the show I can hear whispers, look how darn thin Vikki is, look how pretty she looks, look at her wonderful hairdo, and the music she performed totally perfecto! I know Vikki felt the love from her audience and I will let the venue know how much I enjoyed Vikki's show last night. Vikki's band, back up vocals, and her arranger were all superb, making this one night many will never forget.

I have been a Vikki Carr fan for years and I am so excited over the show! I heard it will be a sell out on the radio a short time ago. Brownsville welcomes Vikki back. I'm seated be in the third row. Maybe I will meet Cookie and her fan club president Vito at the show. I meet them in 2002 in Brownsville and are real nice people. Off to get ready for the show! PS I agree with Juan Cookie couldnt be a day over 40.

I am attending the concert and I can't wait to hear Vikki live again. Two hours of Vikki singing will take me over the edge! Vikki always sells well in Brownsville, I went to a show a few years ago that was sold out, I am sure this will be too. I live in Brownsville and I am very excited. I am glad the college brought Vikki here tonight. See you all at the show. Hi Cookie! What the article forgot to mention was Vikki's award winning website VikkiCarr net and with the photos of Cookie on Vikki's website couldnt be a day over 40.
