Boyz II Brownsville

Boyz II Men

The Monitor

The Grammy award-winning '90s R&B group Boyz II Men will serenade an audience at the Brownsville Sports Park during a free concert event on July 4.

Admission into the performance by the former quartet will be first come, first serve. Doors to the concert area are expected to open around 3 p.m.

This is the first Fourth of July being hosted at the park, and Christopher Patterson of Brownsville's Parks and Recreation Department said they wanted to make it a memorable one.

"Anyone in their 20s, 30s or definitely 40s remembers Boyz II Men," the Detroit native said.

In the five-year period starting in 1992, the Philadelphia-born group sold more than 60 million albums.  They garnered eight No. 1 singles, including "End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You" and "One Sweet Day."

In 2003, the group bid farewell to their baritone band mate Michael McCary, who left because of chronic back problems brought on by scoliosis. The three remaining members recently performed on ABC's Dancing With the Stars.

Patterson said concertgoers are advised to bring blankets and umbrellas because there will be no seating available close to the stage. There will be some bleacher seating available farther away.

He said he would be "shocked" if fewer than 20,000 people attended the event. Early arrival is encouraged.

The Brownsville Sports Park is located at 1000 Sports Park Blvd., off the Merriman exit.
