BROWNSVILLE - One hundred feet from December’s bustling Christmas shopping on Elizabeth Street, a little faith will open its doors on East Thirteenth Street.
“La Fe,” a new exhibit of religious artwork, opens for a public reception on Thursday. Local artists contributed to Galeria 409’s latest installation, from ceramics to painting to photography.
Mark Clark, the gallery’s owner, has compiled the works from 20 artists.
First time exhibitioner Margaret Perez is excited to have her four of her photographs displayed in the show, all of which were taken in Brownsville.
“I had a life-changing event,” Perez said, of her decision to learn photography and begin professionally taking portraits. “I had breast cancer. It opened my eyes. I thought, what do
I really want to do? This is what I really want to do.”
Perez and her husband both take photographs. He currently has two photos up at the University of Texas and Texas Southmost College.
“Mark gives so much to us,” Perez said. “An opportunity to show in a place like this is a privilege.”
Clark became a spiritual person years ago when a good friend changed his perspective on the meaning of belief.
“I figured my place in hell was guaranteed,” he said. “But she told me, ‘It’s not like God is over here, over there. God is everywhere,” he said, widening his eyes. “We’re all connected.”
The opening reception for “La Fe” will be Thursday, December 13 at 6:30 at 409 E. Thirteenth Street.
