WESLACO — DeWayne GoLightly, of The Go Lightly Project, sounded charged about performing with the hip-hop artist Lil Flip on Saturday.
“It’s gonna be pretty awesome,” he said. “Lil Flip, he’s played everywhere, man. Like when I lived in Kentucky, he was one of the main artists that they would try to briefing all the way to Kentucky. It’s gonna be an honor to do songs with him.”
Lil Flip, also known as “the Freestyle King” from Houston, will perform at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show grounds at 10 p.m. However, other activities, including a car show, bikini contest and toy drive, will begin at 3 p.m., not to mention other musical acts.
“We have a lot of local talent that’s going to be performing as well,” said Randy Silva, general manager of Hulky Management Films, which is promoting the entire show.
Alex Canchola, president of Hulky Management, said he’s glad that the Go Lightly Project is getting the chance to perform for such big crowds.
“I’m happy that they are going to be able to perform, and that way they can get some bigger type of exposure,” Canchola said. “They are going to perform three different songs.”
One of those songs, said GoLightly, will be the group’s lead single, “Sweat It Out,” which he said is the second most requested song on local radio. They’ll also do a song entitled “Transformer,” which he is trying to get on the sequel of the movie by the same name.
“As a matter of fact, everybody feels pretty good about it,” he said. “So there’s a good chance it’ll be the theme song.”
How does that make him feel?
“Dude! That’s a dream come true right there,” he said.
GoLightly, who sings and play keyboards, and his musical partner, Jonathan “Jiro” Rodriguez (guitar and vocals), have also performed with Don Omar, Rakim y Ken Y, Aventura, Mims,
PitBull, Baby Bash, Paula DeAnda, NB Riders, June Bug Slim, Down a.k.a. Kilo, TMI Boys, Lil’ Rob and 2x1.
Rodriguez and GoLightly have been performing music together for about a year and a half.
“We talked on the computer when I was back in Kentucky and I had no idea where the Valley was,” he said. “What ended up happening was, I moved down here to the Valley. He happened to live here. I was looking for an artist, he was looking for a producer, so we just happened to put it together pretty much.”
He said their music is hard to categorize. It doesn’t fit into a specific genre; many people call it dance music, but it’s more of a mix between house, R&B and hip-hop.
“We have the real housey, techno-style kicks,” he said.
He said he would like to tour overseas - their music does get played a great deal in other countries.
“I’d like to see the world,” he said. “I would like to leave a legacy.”
