SAN BENITO - The doctors have given Fruity Villareal a choice: give up his music career or give up walking.
Saturday night will be the final performance for the conjunto artist.
Villareal has been diagnosed with Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis. The pain has been crippling.
"If I play a gig it takes me a couple of days to recover," he said. "The next day I can't even get out of bed."
Villareal said he tried playing his accordion while sitting on a stool. "But then I couldn't walk after the show," he said.
For his finale, Villareal chose La Villita, San Benito's dance hall.
"I thought all of the history there made it a good place to say goodbye," he said.
Villarreal started playing professionally when he was still a teenager and has self-produced 10 albums.
With the proper treatment, as well as diet and exercise, Villareal said he might be back on stage.
"This is something I love," he said.
Tickets for the concert and dance cost $10 at the door.
