Clay Walker has had 31 titles on the Billboard singles chart. He has created four platinum-selling albums and has recorded a duet with the legendary Freddy Fender.
But Walker isn’t just about the music. He’s also a passionate advocate for Multiple Sclerosis research. Having been diagnosed with the disease, a chronic progressive nervous disorder that hinders communication between muscles and the brain, Walker decided to take action to raise awareness about the disease and promote funding to find a cure for it.
He created Band Against MS, a not-for-profit organization committed to providing educational information for those living with Multiple Sclerosis, funding programs researching a cure for Multiple Sclerosis and funding programs helping those living with the disease.
Walker will expand his mission to the Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, playing in a golf tournament to raise funds for the foundation and by putting on a concert.
“We’re tying to raise awareness,” said Jo-Jo Cerda, program director for KTEX and organizer of the event. “There’s lots of people in the Valley who have it.”
Even if you’re not interested in M.S., Walker’s concert at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Grounds promises to be an interesting night.
“Clay is bringing the entire dog-and-pony show down,” Cerda said. “Any time Clay Walker puts on a show it’s phenomenal.”
Cerda expects Walker to perform many of his hits including “Dreaming With My Eyes Open,” “What Is It To You” and “Before the Next Tear Drop Falls,” which he also performs in Spanish.
“Clay’s had lots of number ones,” Cerda said.
Walker came to La Villa Real in 2004, but the height of the roof made doing a full-blown concert difficult. The show grounds has a much higher roof, so Walker can now put on a show in the Valley like he has San Antonio.
“It’s going to be explosive,” Cerda said.
